VIIKKOKIRJE – WEEKLY LETTER 8/2021

VIIKKOKIRJE / WEEKLY LETTER 8 / 2021

The skippers week started with a fun play day inside as it was too slippery to go out for a trip. Tuesdays muskari was held this time by Tia-Maria, where we practiced making and dancing in a circle! On Wednesday we travelled to India! We made some beautiful henna arts and crafts, where we practiced our fine drawing skills. Thursday we had gymnastics! We made a circuit course where we practiced balance, moving backwards, rollie pollies and crossing the centerline of the body. To end the week we celebrated Kalevala day by making our own jewellery! The kids loved using their fine motor skills to thread beads onto string and scrunch tin foil to create silver jems! They all wore them with pride. Throughout the day, we read the story of Kalevala.

The adventurous Sailors chose India as the last destination of our exploration in Asia. We were totally mesmerised by the colourful culture of this biggest country of the South Asian Subcontinent. We liked very much its magnificent architectural heritages like Taj Mahal that we built together the miniature LEGO version consisting about 6,000 pieces. The joyful Bollywood dances and songs full of romance and adventures became new jams of some of ours, and we loved traditional Indian dances! We loved the use of beautiful flower petals, breathtaking Rangoli designs make from coloured rice or sand, important celebrations like Diwali at which candles are lit and Holi at which people tossing colourful powder towards each other. We patiently designed and completed our own coloured Basmati rice painting by carefully applying the glue in 1 area of the paper plate and spreading 1 colour on it at a time. The end results looked very beautiful! We had a look at the real Indian food that was quite different from our daily food, and it smelt special and delicious! We also got to know various kinds of plants and spices like pepper and coriander and tropical fruits like mango that Indian people use a lot besides rice, grains and dairy products in their cuisine. Certainly we got familiar with Indian’s animals like Bengal Tiger and Asian Elephant that we mimicked in the Yoga session after playing group games inspired by traditional and still popular Indian children’s games. We also tried to figure out how to play Cricket that is the National Sport of India. We are aware that Peacock is the National Bird of India, cows are considered sacred in India and Indian people respect animals. Therefore, it is not strange that people make floral necklaces for cows and clothes for elephants. Inspired by the traditional Mehndi painting, we got our own colourful versions full of blooming flowers and different forms of leaves on the face and arms as well. Next week, we will resume the voyages of courageous Captain Cook’s sailing from Asia to Oceania from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean again and explore the biggest island country of the whole world Australia where we will definitely encounter so many unique and adorable animals and plants like Platypus, Koala, Kangaroo, Wallaby, Wombat, Kingfisher, Eucalyptus and so on! We will surely and humbly listen to the tales of the aboriginal people’s and appreciate their wisdom that has been passed from one generation to another for thousands of years. The hardworking Viskaris enjoyed the lesson about Letter Oo and the Alphabet by singing with Elmo from Sesame Street and the Pre-Viskaris also joined in! “The Canine Kalevala” were also read for the Kalevala Day for us to get more familiar with the tales and their morals of this Finnish National Epic
