VIIKKOKIRJE / WEEKLY LETTER 49/ 2020

Onnea Suomi!

Kipparit Tällä viikolla Kippareissa on viikon mittaan juteltu omasta kotimaastamme Suomesta.

The patriotic and intelligent Sailors enjoyed our “Week of the Independence Day” by learning, celebrating and having fun together! Throughout the week, we went through Finland’s national symbols, Brown Bear, Finnhorse, Finnish Spitz, Whooper Swan, European Perch, Seven-spot Ladybird, Silver Birch, Lily of the Valley and Granite etc., by recognising photos and toys and colouring in pages together. We love singing the National Anthem of Finland “Maamme-laulu” with our angelic voices, and it was a very good opportunity to get to know the National Poet Mr. Runeberg and Mr. Pacius who created the song. Thanks to a Sailor’s family, we watched the amazing video of the family singing “Finlandia Hymn”, and we kept listening to other symphonies composed by Mr. Sibelius including the Symphony No.2 in D major performed by Vienna Philharmonic and conducted by the legendary Maestro Leonard Bernstein. We also viewed the photos of the 12 Presidents of Finland and the list of Ministers of the Finnish Government and chose our own positions without fighting for any of them: the President, the Prime Minister, the Minister of European Affairs, Santa Claus a.k.a. the Minister of Economic Affairs who takes care of everyone’s pocket money, Christmas presents and Christmas meals, Reindeer a.k.a. the Minister of Transport and Communications who takes care of the delivery of Christmas presents, Elf a.k.a. the Representative of Korvatunturi, the French Ambassador to Finland, the Polish Ambassador to Finland and Ms. Finland! On our Celebration Day, we were all dressed up and looking great! After decorating our classroom with blue ribbons together, we shot a video of us singing “Maamme-laulu” together and wishing everyone a nice Independence Day, and we shared it with our families right away! The Prime Minster lead the government to greet the President by touching elbows, followed by other representatives.

We happily sang the song “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” via Zoom that made Muskari-Sari very happy as well! In the Indoor Gymnastics, we played the Finnish game “Hedelmäsalaatti / Fruit Salad” by being Finnish animals like hares, deer and seals. We also tried the Yoga movements of Squirrel and Seal. Besides making our own Christmas Tree-formed Christmas Calendar and the mini presents together, we open other calendars and read heart-warming letters from our families as well. Pikku Kakkonen’s Christmas Calendar is a big hit among us! On the walking trip in the near neighbourhood, we smelt the fresh scent of the gigantic Christmas Tree in front of the Cathedral of Helsinki, viewed the bright City Centre lit by beautiful lights and decorations and certainly would like to get all the appetising chocolate displayed by the shop window.
