VIIKKOKIRJE – WEEKLY LETTER 4/2021

VIIKKOKIRJE / WEEKLY LETTER 4 / 2021

Kapteenien uusi viikko alkoi puistossa lumileikkien parissa.

Viikon mittaan olemme askarrelleet kotoa tuoduista lasipurkeista omat hyve-helmi -purkit. Ensi viikolla Kipparit alkavat keräämään hyve-helmiä hyvistä teoista ja sanoista. Näin pyrimme konkreettisesti nostamaan positiivisia asioita ryhmässä esille ja kiinnittämään huomiota hyviin sanoihin ja tekoihin. Torstaina harjoittelimme etsimään eroja ja yhtäläisyyksiä ja muodostamaan pareja. Kipparit osaavat hienosti muodostaa jo parijonon! Viikon päätimme tunne- ja kaveritaitoja harjoitellen ja tutustuimme hyve-helmiin ensiviikkoa varten.

The courageous and curious Sailors looked forward for new knowledge and adventures as always! As we wished, this week we travelled once again through time from about 1,900-2,500 years ago’s Classic World forward to about 1,200 years ago’s Viking age. With the help of the global and European maps in the book “The Times Complete History of the World”, we figured out together the areas of the origins of the Viking people and where they explored in the Northern Hemisphere across the Baltic Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean and the Arctic Ocean and what the contemporary countries are in those areas. We coloured national flags of most of those countries and made good use of them in our Viking-themed Indoor Gymnastics in which we were little Viking explorers sail our longship looking for new lands. We also found out that among lots of fun games, the Vikings were also the inventors of “Mölkky “ or “Kubb” that we played with a bit of number recognition and addition when we summed up our scores together. So the Vikings were actually quite playful, weren’t they? By viewing paintings and photos of wrecks of real Viking Longships uncovered in Sweden and Denmark, we made our own by colouring the wide sail with red and painted the body of the ship brown, as well as creating colourful shields hanging by the sides and dragon-looked head and tail. By drawing together our own self-portraits this time in Viking style, we not only reviewed body parts in English but also got familiar with Viking helmets with 2 horns, their beard, moustache and hair styles and their curvy artistic decorative styles. Wei then painted our wonderful designs on our faces, e.g. an entire Viking Longship and the beautiful animal figure that could still be seen in Norway nowadays. We loved the “Vikings Sticker Book”, and everyday we went through 1-2 pages about 1 theme in English in the Circle Time, including “On the Farm”, “At Home”, “Sea People”, “A Feast” and “God’s and Goddesses” etc., and each and every time, we all concentrated very well and couldn’t stop discussing all the fun discoveries, new knowledge and related common sense that we found on the pages even after half an hour, e.g. actually the most of the Viking People were peaceful farmers, there was no windows in their longhouses, they preserved fish and meat very well, they lovedmusic, acrobatics and poetry etc. We were so intelligent! We also actively participated in this week’s birdwatching event “Pihabongaus” on the observating trip to the Outdoor Garden of Kaisaniemi Botanic Garden with binoculars and magnifying glasses. Besides finding birdhouses and bird feeders, We circled birds that we spotted on the posters of winter birds. For our own choices of Project Work “Animals”, we played the Korkeasaari Zoo card set, and for “Outer Space”, we read the fun book “Let’s Go into Space Rocket millions of miles through the galaxy!” Next week, we will make very good use of the materials sent by a Sailor’s mom about France! Bon Voyage!
