VIIKKOKIRJE – WEEKLY LETTER 15/2021

VIIKKOKIRJE / WEEKLY LETTER 15/ 2021

The Captains started the week doing some fun arts and crafts about Africa. In the morning circle we used flash cards, as they are a really fun and interactive tool while teaching kids, to help them learn about some shapes such as “square, triangle, circle, star and heart”. On Tuesday, as usually, some of the Captains enjoyed their music class while the rest of the group had also lots of fun dancing and listening to music. After music class the kids watched a couple videos about African animals, they loved them! On Wednesday the children continued to work on their arts and craft project and enjoyed listening to poems in Finnish in their morning circle. On Thursday, we finally enjoyed a nice and sunny trip around our beautiful neighborhood, the kids were so excited to be outside. We reminded the children about the safety rules for the road and of how important is to always stop, look and listen while walking the streets. After our lovely trip, the talked about spring and we listened to the song “spring time”. Finally the ended the week enjoying a lot with our popular open mic!

The passionate animal loving Sailors said farewell to the splendid civilisations of Ancient Egypt after curiously getting familiar with the hieroglyphical system by going together through the book “The Hieroglyph Detective” and writing in the way of drawing some hieroglyphs chosen from a long list full of figures and images of animals, plants, humans, food and various kinds of tools and containers for agricultural and daily uses back to thousands of years ago. We sailed upstream along the blue Nile River among countless white feluccas while appreciating magnificent pyramids, temples, obelisks and sculptures etc. with beautiful hieroglyphical carvings and paintings on them and certainly green date palm trees along the riverbanks and seemingly endless dessert. We reached the Sahara Desert the largest hot desert in the world and grass and Tree Savannahs in Eastern Africa where we found countless wild animals that are native to The Continent of Africa! Even though we love them so much, we only observed them from afar and don’t disturb their lives in their natural habitats. With 2 Sailors’ family photos, books and souvenirs from Africa, we were able to decorate our classroom with beautiful and unique African elements, appreciate the breathtaking view from the top of Tanzania’s Uhuru Peak that is 5895 metres high above the sea level and that is Africa’s highest point. Surely with the help of the contributions of our parents’, our animal toys and the activities and yoga movements of the Outdoor Gymnastics, we were also able to learn in a fun way English names of wild animals: Crocodile, Giraffe, African Elephant, Cobra, Snake, Lion, Lizard, Baboon, Monkey, Hippopotamus, Zebra, Antelope, Oryx, Water Buffalo, Ostrich, Meerkat, Cheetah, Leopard, Donkey, Camel, Fennic Fox, Gorilla, Rhinoceros, warthog and Penguin etc! After crafting the paper diorama of Savannah and the 3D paper craft African Elephant, we still would very much like to craft the diorama of African Oasis, so we took the materials and instructions home to have fun together with our families! Next week we will take a turn at Lake Victoria towards the rainforests of Central Africa and the coastal line of Western Africa.
